SUMMARY:OCT 2026: AWL Trip to Virtus Americas Regional Games (Peru) Cancelled by Event Host
DESCRIPTION:March 27th Update: We’re sorry to hear that the Peru organizers have had to cancel this event. We will reach out to interested US athletes if any alternative locations or dates are explored or confirmed by Virtus.  \nMarch 1st Update: We are waiting on event details (including MQS) from the organizers in Peru and will begin sending communications about team selection 6 months before this event April 1\, 2026 : )\nUS Athlete Interest Form (Turned off since Event has been Cancelled)\nVirtus Regional Championships for athletes with intellectual impairments offer athletes from each of the five Virtus regions (Americas\, Oceania\, Europe\, Asia) a high-level event one year prior to the Virtus Global Games World Championships (which are held every four years). \nAs the US member of Virtus\, Athletes Without Limits will field a US Team to this inaugural event based on athlete interest in the sports offered. Details including qualification standards in some sports\, will be posted as they are released by Virtus and the host country. \nCompetition Dates: Oct 2-12\, 2025 (Final travel dates to be confirmed closer to event) \nVirtus Sports: Basketball\, Cycling\, Futsal (Soccer)\, Judo\, Swimming\, Taekwondo\, Tennis and Table Tennis\, Track & Field (Athletics) \nEligibility Groups: New interested athletes should apply for Virtus International Eligibility in the Virtus  II1-Intellectual Disability\, II2-Additional Impairment/Down Syndrome or II3-Autism+ competition groups. \nEligibility Deadline TBA: Athletes are encourage to apply from our eligibility page as early as possible before the event as eligibility can take 6-12 weeks or longer if new assessments are needed. \n\nVirtus Announcement: Virtus\, the International Sports Federation for athletes with an intellectual impairment\, has announced that Peru will host the 2026 Virtus Americas Regional Games – the inaugural Games for the Region. \nThe event will be hosted by Federacion Deportiva Peruana De Personas Con Discapacidad Intellectual- FEDEPEDI\, Virtus member organization in Peru and will take place between 2nd October 2026 and 11th October 2026\, in Lima. \nPeru’s stunning landscapes\, from the Andes mountains to the Amazon jungle will provide the perfect backdrop for an exceptional sports event. The Games are predicted to foster camaraderie\, cultural exchange\, and the growth of sports in the region. \nManuel del Castillo\, President of FEDEPEDI\, is also the Vice President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee – COP. expressed his excitement for the games. \n“We are deeply grateful and honoured to have been chosen to host the VIRTUS American Games here in Peru. Our rich and diverse culture\, steeped in history and tradition\, provides a fitting setting for this prestigious event that celebrates inclusion and amplifies vital efforts focused on empowering people with intellectual disabilities.” \n“The Games will act as a catalyst to raise awareness and foster a collective effort to create an inclusive world for all. Through the unifying power of sport\, we can show the immense potential of people with intellectual disabilities who with the right support can achieve remarkable goals and overcome challenges\,” he further added. \nFEDEPEDI will collaborate with the National Paralympic Association of Peru (ANPPERU)\, the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP)\, and the Peruvian Institute of Sports (IPD). This collaboration will have a significant impact\, and ensure the successful organization and execution of the games. \nThe multi-sport event will offer competition across ten sports: Athletics\, Badminton\, Basketball\, Cycling\, Futsal\, Judo\, Swimming\, Taekwondo\, Tennis and Table Tennis. \nVirtus already holds Regional Games in Europe and jointly in Asia/Oceania in the year before Global Games. Marc Truffaut\, Virtus President explained how important it was for the Americas region to be added\, \n“Virtus is developing a very comprehensive competition pathway for athletes with an intellectual impairment and Regional Games are a critical part of this.
