At the 2009 Global Games World Championships for athletes with intellectual disability there were 50-100 athletes each from the countries of Australia, France, Italy, Portugal, South Africa and Brazil — yet only three were from the United States. Competitions were held in nine sports yet the US was only involved in two (cycling and swimming).
While the United States has ample opportunities for persons with intellectual disability to participate in recreational sport, the coaching, training, support and racing opportunities needed to compete with other countries at an international world-championship level has not been available to athletes who desire to take their sport to the highest levels. With the startup of Athletes Without Limits, we are changing this but we need your help.

US Cyclist, Syd Lea, pictured with the gold and bronze medalists, won 5 medals for his 2nd place overal standing in the 5-day cycling competition; yet had no cycling teammates with which to share the victories.
