About the Event
Global Games is an Olympic-style, open competition that includes Athletics (Track & Field, Cross Country), Cycling, Basketball (team), Futsal (team indoor soccer), Rowing (indoor demonstration) Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Judo (demonstration). Each sport follows the rules of its official international governing body. For example cycling events are officiated by UCI officials following UCI rules and distances.
To date over 1,300 athletes from 33 countries have already registered to compete! Athletes, family members and coaches are welcome to travel with us. Like the Olympic Village, everyone involved will stay in host accommodations (hotels or dorms) and will share meals and other cultural experiences.
What does it cost to participate?
For 2009, athletes, coaches and families must pay their own expenses (approximately $1,020 per person for registration, housing and ground transport) plus airfare to the Czech Republic. As we grow the association, we hope to provide financial assistance to athletes for future events. Thanks to a generous donation Athletes Without Limits will cover athlete airfare to the Czech Republic!
Do athletes need a parent, coach or chaperon?
Parents and coaches are welcome to come but athletes who are able to travel alone and/or rendezvous in Washington DC can travel with Athletes Without Limits staff (male and female). Our tentative travel dates are July 3rd and July 15th.
Who is eligible to compete?
Athletes who are considered intellectually disabled according to ADA guidelines will likely be considered eligible by INAS-FID. (IQ below 70-75, significant limitations in adaptive skill areas and sport, disability originated before the age of 18). Some sports (such as swimming) require time standards. Visit the Global Games website for sport by sport requirements or contact us for help.
What is the registration deadline?
Athletes Without Limits must receive the INAS-FID Eigibility Application no later than April 1, 2009 to complete the registration process in time for Global Games. We strongly encourage you to submit your application as early as possible to ensure your eligibility can be confirmed in time for the event. Athletes and parents/guardians who intend to travel should apply for a passport (if needed) as early as possible.
